2007-2008 Teacher Fellowship Grant Recipients

Based on the recommendations of its Teacher Advisory Board, the American Immigration Law Foundation has awarded two grants in its annual teacher fellowship competition. Teachers will conduct their programs during the 2007-2008 school year and report back to AILF on their experience. Those results will, in turn, be published in the next edition of AILF's Teacher Resource Guide.


Title: Famous Immigrant Place Settings
School: Peabody School
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Awarded: $709
Project: Third grade students will write special invitations to famous deceased immigrants and set a place for said immigrant at a special banquet table. Students will also decorate cups, plates, bowls and placemats in addition to writing expository essays honoring the immigrant's life. Through art and writing, students will represent their chosen immigrant's life through his/her cultural/ethnic background, where he/she lived in the U.S., accomplishments and other personal information. An exhibit will follow to present their unique and culturally diverse table.



Title: Digital Natives = Digital Storytelling
School: Frewsburg Central Jr. Sr. High School
Location: Frewsburg, New York
Awarded: $1,000
Project: An action-based research project for middle school students where they will increase their understanding of both their own families' backgrounds as well the issues that cause people to leave their former homelands. Students will create podcasts of their work.



Title: All We Are Booklet Project
School: Keansburg School District
Location: Keansburg, New Jersey
Awarded: $850
Project: Students will select a country or culture to research and create four-page booklets. Booklets will include immigration statistics, cultural contributions or influences on art, cuisine, music, language, literature and other culturally signification events. These booklets will then be showcased at an annual school project fair for peers, family and friends to see.
