Alan Cumming
Tony Award winner Alan Cumming has an eclectic career that has included a myriad of outstanding performances in theater, feature films, and writing and directing for film and television. Mr. Cumming was born and raised in Scotland and trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. While still a student he made his professional debut in both television and theatre.
After three years of theatre work in Scotland, Mr. Cumming made his debut in 1988 at the Royal Court in The Conquest of the South Pole and was nominated Most Promising Newcomer in that year's Olivier Awards.
He went on to win an Olivier Award for Accidental Death of an Anarchist at the Royal National Theatre in 1991 and was nominated again the following year for his performance in La Bete at the Lyric Hammesmith. In total, Mr. Cumming has been nominated for a record four Olivier Awards.
Mr. Cumming's unforgettable portrayal of the Emcee in the Broadway musical of Cabaret was one of the most celebrated performances of recent years. In addition to a Tony Award, his performance also won him the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Theater World and the New York Public Advocate's Awards. Mr. Cumming most recently made his return to the stage in the theater production of Design For Living.
Apart from his work on Broadway, Mr. Cumming has proven to be one of the busiest actors in Hollywood. Earlier this year, he appeared as Cuban Dictator General 'Batista' in the comedy Company Man. Mr. Cumming also appeared in the hit action-comedy Spy Kids, as well as in the film version of the cartoon classic Josie and the Pussycats.
Past films include a role in Get Carter, a remake of the 70's British action-thriller of the same name. He also garnered attention for his memorable role in the independent film Urbania. Mr. Cumming appeared opposite Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange in the epic film Titus. He had a memorable role in the controversial film Eyes Wide Shut with Tom Cruise and starred in Plunkett and Macleane.
In addition to these films, Mr. Cumming also starred as the documentary filmmaker in the tribute to the Spice Girls Spice World. He appeared opposite an all-star cast in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, and starred in Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion and Buddy. He was also seen as the 'Reverend Elton' opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma, the computer whiz 'Boris Grishenko' in Goldeneye and the conniving 'Sean Walsh' in Circle of Friends. Other feature film credits include Prague for which he received Best Actor Honors at the Atlantic Film Festival and Second Best.
On television Mr. Cumming was heard as the voice of the 'Devil' in NBC's animated comedy "God, the Devil, and Bob". He also starred as the sinister 'Rooster' in the ABC musical production of "Annie". The film received a record number of viewers and 11 Emmy nominations with its Tony-award winning cast.
Mr. Cumming divides his time between his homes in London and New York.
