Soledad O'Brien Soledad O'Brien has been co-anchor of "Weekend Today," NBC's top-rated weekend morning news program, since July, 1999. In addition to her responsibilities at "Weekend Today," O'Brien reports for "Nightly News" during the week and on weekend editions. She also serves as anchor for MSNBC's "Morning Blend," a two-hour news talk show on Saturday and Sunday mornings. O'Brien contributes to MSNBC.com, is the contributing technology editor for "USA Weekend Magazine" and a technology columnist for Women's Wire's website, Women.com. |
O'Brien has covered a number of major breaking news stories for both NBC and MSNBC, including the special coverage of John F. Kennedy, Jr.'s plane crash, the high school shootings in Littleton, Colorado and Springfield, Oregon and the fatal Alabama tornadoes. She also traveled to Cuba to cover the Pope's historic visit in 1998.
In 1996, O'Brien hosted MSNBC's Emmy-award winning program, "The Site," devoted to the Internet revolution. Prior to joining MSNBC, O'Brien was a reporter for KRON-TV, the NBC affiliate in San Francisco, since 1993. She also served as KRON's East Bay Bureau Chief. For two concurrent seasons, she co-hosted Discovery Channel's "The Know Zone" for which she won a local Emmy. From 1991 to 1993, O'Brien worked for NBC News in New York, where she produced health and science stories for "NBC Nightly News" and "Today." She began her career as an associate producer and news writer at the then-NBC affiliate, WBZ-TV in Boston.
O'Brien was named to "Irish American" magazine's 1998 "Top 100 Irish Americans" list and in 1997 was awarded the Hispanic Achievement Award in Communications. She is also a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. O'Brien studied at Harvard University and currently resides in New York City with her husband and daughter.
